Weight Management

Weight management. This is a dream that has become a billion dollar industry, touting miracle and quick-fix schemes across the world. We would all like to believe that trimming pounds and inches can be that easy. Yet, long-lasting health habits are not an over-night magical formula. Knowledge about nutrition, exercise and adapting these areas to your individual lifestyle are the essential factors that will determine success in weight management, and overall health. This is why we feel committed to give you as much information as possible regarding how the body works, the nutrients it needs and how to blend these concepts into your present habits.

How Flax seed Assists with Weight Management

Fat

In the quest to trim pounds, people often decide to eliminate a lot of the fat from their diets. The theory seems to make sense, yet the mistake is made in the types of fats that are eliminated and usually replaced with foods of little to no nutritive value. Also, total elimination of fats in the diet can essentially cause you to gain weight in the long run. As we reviewed in the section Health Benefits of Flax, a certain amount of fat in the diet acts as the ignition for burning calories and maintenance of the metabolic processes.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids can aid weight loss by enabling each of the body's cells to function in the optimal manner. Accumulation of fat is the body's response to a surplus of energy over needs. When the reverse occurs, as in a weight loss diet, the stored energy (fat) should be liberated and burned. However, some people appear to have a problem with this mechanism, and it has been suggested that a part of the reason for this is that the membranes which surround each of the body's cells are not functioning in the way they should because their composition is out of balance. Cell membranes are made up largely of polyunsaturates. We now know that there are two families of polyunsaturates which are important in the make up of cell membranes: the omega-3 family found in MegaOmega™ Organic Sprouted Flax Products, and the omega-6 family from vegetable oils like sunflower seed oil. Over the past 50 years, diets in the West have changed, to supply about twice as much omega-6, and only half as much omega-3. Thus the balance has changed. Cell membrane composition has changed too, and some scientists think that this change in membrane composition has made it more difficult for cells to lose the accumulated fat they contain. Evidence recently published showed that weight loss was greater on a calorie-restricted diet when a small amount of Omega 3 essential fatty acids were added to the diet, compared to the same diet when olive oil was added instead.

Thermogenesis & Oxygen

Other attributes linked to essential fatty acid intake and weight management include thermogenesis and increased oxygen uptake at the cellular level. Thermogenesis is the result of activated brown adipose tissue. These specialized fat cells, which comprise roughly 10% of total body fat, are capable of burning approximately one fourth of calories consumed. A breakthrough came when it was discovered that gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a special fat nutrient, was shown to activate brown fat. GLA is metabolized from the linoleic acid found in flax.

Increased oxygen uptake is experienced when greater utilization of oxygen occurs in our cells. This precipitates an accelerated production of the cellular energy catalyst adenosinetri-phostate (ATP). ATP is important because it is necessary to supply the energy for all the work the body must do. For these reasons and more, competitive athletes have included essential fatty acids in their diets to facilitate athletic performance. Alaskan sled dog mushers have added flax to their dogs' diets for the same reasons. Increased energy production is associated with accelerated caloric burn.

In seeking a dietary supplement of essential fatty acids, insist on MegaOmega™ Organic Sprouted Flax. The levels, stability, and bioavailability of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids are unmatched.

Fiber

It also helps to give you that “satisfied” feeling when you have completed a meal. Nutritionists term this as satiety – the feeling of fullness. Foods with minimal nutritive value or what is know as “empty calories” leave you still craving food, even though you may have consumed many calories. No one can maintain a diet when they are constantly feeling deprived.

Learning what is “good fat” and “bad fat” for your body’s health is essential for long-term weight management. The omega-3 essential fatty acids and fiber content in flax seed will assist you in your weight management. Refer to the sections on fiber and omega-3 essential fatty acids for more information about their important qualities.
